Elisha Israel, a.k.a. Sacral Crown has had a busy month: he recently moved to Asheville, North Carolina, released his debut EP, "Rebirth" today, and on top of that, performed at The Circle Asheville this afternoon.

Sacral Crown, the 23-year-old Producer/DJ, recently uprooted from Ann Arbor, Michigan to find a more expansive community of artists and musicians in Asheville, North Carolina. It took just a little over a month before his downtempo, cerebral sound started perking up ears in Asheville.

At age 16, Sacral Crown began his music career as an emcee (formerly known as IsHeReal?), but his thirst for musical knowledge led him to experiment with beat-production, and the transition from emcee to producer flowed naturally.

"I haven’t been rapping much recently," Sacral Crown said. "I decided to start learning how to produce, originally to make my own beats, but I ended up making downtempo/ambient/psychedelic electronic music."

Today at The Circle Asheville's "Second Saturday Shakedown," a local art and music show, Sacral Crown opened with a set of original material, as well as covers, followed by performances from Terrestrial Sound, Selector Cleofus and Damascus.

"The event was outdoors, which I love, and I felt really good about the set," Sacral Crown said. "...It wasn't a 'get hype' atmosphere--super laid back, just how I like it."

As a prelude to his first performance, Sacral Crown released his four-track EP "Rebirth", pre-show. "Rebirth" was a long time coming, and Sacral Crown warns not to get caught up in the pressure to compose the "perfect project."

"That’s not possible," Sacral Crown said. "I approach the creative process with the attitude of, when it feels right, let it go before I can start to doubt myself."

Self-doubt, among other hardships during his younger years proved to be a motivator in Sacral Crown's life. At age 16, he was forced to cope with the death of his older brother, a harsh reality that ultimately inspires the music he makes today.

"My brother's passing right before I turned 17 really accelerated my writing and put me in the mindset that I really wanted to write and make music for him," Sacral Crown said.

With his brother as his greatest musical influence, the title of Sacral Crown's debut EP, "Rebirth," seems only fitting as a symbol of his transition from emcee to producer, and a rebirth of passion to chase his dreams of being a musician.

For Sacral Crown, taking his craft seriously meant moving from what he calls a "limited" music scene in Ann Arbor, to a more vibrant environment in Asheville.

"Ann Arbor has dope music coming out, but the artists do not support each other," Sacral Crown said.

Since leaving Ann Arbor, Sacral Crown has seen positive change in Ann Arbor's music scene and comerodery amongst local artists. Still, Sacral Crown says escaping a somewhat "unhealthy" and static music environment was necessary to polish his unique, ambient sound.

"I was too involved in the Michigan scene," Sacral Crown said. "...I didn’t feel that I had the space to get away and make my own music, so I left."

And since relocating to Asheville, Sacral Crown has proven his sound is here to stay, emphasizing music as his top priority.

"I don't need a social life, I've done all that--I'm rather sick of the party scene," Sacral Crown said.

"Grind time."
